James Clark Ross Heads for the Arctic

James Clark Ross is elected to the Royal Society. He was also sent on a mission to the Artic this year in order to try and find out what happened to the expedition by Sir John Franklin to find the North West Passage. Sir John had been using the ships that he himself had used on his Antarctic expedition, and had had taken his friend Francis Crozier to command HMS Terror as he had on the Ross’s Antarctic expedition.

Ye Mingchen Becomes Governor of Guangdon

1848

Ye Mingchen becomes Governor of Guangdon at the start of the Taiping Rebellion. Due to a mistake in translation the Treaty of Nanking read differently in English and Chinese. In the English version traders were allowed to live in Guangzhou, but in the Chinese version they were only allowed to stay on their ships in the harbour. Ye kept to the Chinese version of the treaty, even though this caused friction with the European merchants who wanted to follow the version in English.
