Walcheren Campaign Begins

Jul 30, 1809

An expedition is sent to seal the mouth of the Scheldt to prevent the port of Antwerp being used as a base for the French navy. They were transported in a fleet of around 40 vessels including:

  • sixteen 74 gun warships of the third rate
  • customs-house and excise cutters
  • a packet ship

They transported a large number of troops to the swampy island of Walcheren, where the British troops started to suffer malaria

The French start to move reinforcements into the area under Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. This makes the capture of Antwerp impossible.
