Lawrence Investigates Indian Sappers

Samuel Hill Lawrence performs a sortie against the rebels to investigate whether they were trying to undermine the walls from inside one of the buildings near the residency. He was the first to mount the ladder up into the windows of the building. His pistol was knocked from his hand by one of the rebels inside and had to fight hand to hand.

Attack on Baillie Guard Gate

The rebels set fire to the Baillie Guard Gate. Lieutenant Aitken is the first man there. Despite being under fire the whole time Lieutenant Aitken and his men opened the gate and removed all the burning wood to save the gate.

Furreed Buksh Palace Captured

Aug 26, 1857

Lieutenant Aitken captures the Furreed Buksh Palace. The rebels had tried to retreat back through a gate, but Aitken was able to get their before they secured it. The British forced their way in through the door and captured the palace.

Lieutenant Aitken Takes a Gun

Aug 29, 1857

Lieutenant Aitken volunteers to take a rebel gun. He took a party of four soldiers with him through the ruined town towards the gun. Rebels fired down on them from the rooftops, but they held their ground until reinforcements arrived. Then between them they dragged the gun back into the Residency.

Attack on Lucknow

During the attack on Lucknow Able Seaman Edward Robinson jumped over the sandbags of the battery to extinguish a fire while being shot at. He was dangerously wounded, but survived and was awarded the Victoria Cross for this action.
