SS Great Britain is Damaged

The SS Great Britain is damaged is a storm off Cape Hope. She takes shelter in the Falkland Islands, but when the damage is inspected it is decided that it will not be economically viable to repair her. She is then sold on to the Falkland Islands Company to be used as a coal storage hulk.

HMS Canopus sets herself up to defend Stanley from an attack by von Spee. Her top masts are removed and she is camouflaged to prevent her her being seen at her firing position. An observation post is set up ashore, connected to the ship by telephone so that she can fire over the island against approaching ships without being visible.

SS Great Britain Scuttled

SS Great Britain has now degraded so far that she can no longer even be used as a hulk. She is towed to Sparrow Cove near Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands and scuttled. She sits on the bottom, but her upper structure is still above the surface and is still sometime visited by Falkland Islanders.
