HMS Prince of Wales Becomes HMS Britannia

1869

HMS Britannia is replaced by HMS Prince of Wales, a wooden warship that had never been fitted for sea. The name, figurehead and cadets from Britannia are transfer to the new ship, which then takes up her role training officers for the Royal Navy.

Collision With Training Brig

Aug 26, 1901

A Brig, called HMS Dolphin, assigned to HMS Britannia in order to give the cadets seagoing experience collides with a merchant vessel near Dartmouth. Three of the Dolphin's boats were smashed.

Communard At HMS Britannia

Apr 08, 1904

The Torquay Times reports that the french professor on HMS Britannia had been a Captain in the French cavalry during the siege of Paris. He joined with the Communards during the Commune of Paris, who made him a general. He was wounded during the final fall of Paris, but was able to hail a cab to take him home before escaping to Britain.

Bombed

Sep 1942

Six Focke-Wulf aircraft bombed the College. Two bombs had penetrated the College's main block, causing damage to the quarterdeck and surrounding rooms. After this the students and staff move Eaton Hall in Cheshire.

Charles De Gaule is given the college buildings for the French government in exile, with many French resistance fighters going through Dartmouth thanks to the gunboat flotilla that operated from it.

Ratings Train At Britannia

Britannia is used for training Ratings as well as Officers during the Covid lockdown period in order to allow for more social distancing during training. The first group passes out in August, making them the first time that Ratings and Officers had trained together.
