Sir James Hope orders HMS Encounter, under Captain Roderick Dew, to find the rebel leaders and tell them not to attack Ningpo. He was also ordered to give a different message to the imperial authorities in Ningpo and ask them how they expected to resist the Taipings when the assault came.

Captain Dew Leaves a Message

Captain Roderick Dew is going up the river near Ningpo in a smaller gunboat to find the Taipings, but the river eventually becomes too small even for that and they had to go forward in small boats. They reach a village that had been occupied. They stopped when they heard firing from the village and left Hope's message in a cleft bamboo stuck into the ground.
