Thames Tunnel Floods

May 18, 1827

The tunnel suddenly flooded. A few days later Isambard Kingdom Brunel had calculated were the breech had happened and had himself lowered into the Thames in a diving bell. He threw bags of clay into the hole plugging it up. Then, once the water had been pumped out of the tunnel, he held a banquet inside it.

Second Flood of the Thames Tunnel

Jan 12, 1828

There is a second sudden flood of the Thames Tunnel. This time Isambard Kingdom Brunel is inside at the time. He headed for the emergency exit, only to find it locked. A contractor named Beamish heard him from the other side of the door. By the time that he broke the door down Isambard was unconscious. They pulled him out and he was revived. He was lucky the 6 of the miners that he had been with died.

Clifton Bridge Competition

1829

While recuperating near Bristol Brunel hears about the challenge of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge. 22 designs were submitted, including 4 from Brunel. The committee rejected 17 because of either cost or appearance. They then called in Thomas Telford to make a final selection, who then rejected all of them. He made his own proposal, but this was also too expensive.

Second Clifton Bridge Competition

A second design competition for the Clifton bridge is held. They initially selected a design by Smith and Hawkes of the Eagle Foundry in Birmingham. Brunel had a personal meeting with the judges and persuaded them to declare him winner instead.

Queen Square Riots

The second Reform Bill was voted down in the House of Lords causing a series of riots across England. The cities wealthier citizens, including Isambard Kingdom Brunel, are drafted in to restore order, but much of the city centre was still burnt. As a result, construction of the Clifton Suspension Bridge stops because the subscription payments stop coming in.

Brunel is appointed chief engineer of the Great Western Railway. He planned to use a broad gauge of 7 ft 1⁄4 in for the track as it would offer superior running at high speeds.

Maidenhead Bridge is Completed

1838

The Maidenhead Bridge is completed. The centring for the arches is left in place as people are worried about the innovative nature of the arch design. They would eventually be washed away during a storm showing that there was no need to have been worried about it.

The PS Great Western begins her maiden voyage from Bristol to New York. A fire broke out in the engine room. The fire was put out, but in the confusion Brunel was injured after falling 20 feet.

Brunel Inhales Half-Sovereign Coin

1843

Brunel accidentally inhaled a half-sovereign coin while doing a magic trick for his children. It became lodged in his windpipe, and a special pair of forceps failed to remove it, as did a machine devised by Brunel to shake it loose. Then his father suggested that he be turned upside down to shake it loose.

SS Great Britain Goes to Sea

SS Great Britain finally gets out of Bristol Docks after the locks are widened to let her pass. She still got stuck on the second set of locks on her first attempt. Brunel tries again the next day after getting workmen to take the top layer of blocks off the lock, which, combined with a very high tide, allows her to finally escape Bristol for the sea. She is then towed to London for her final fitting out.

SS Great Britain Runs Ashore

Sep 22, 1846

SS Great Britain runs ashore Dundrum Bay on the north-east coast of Ireland. Measures are put in place to protect her, organised by her designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but even with these no other ship would have survived the winter storms. However, her iron hull is so strong that she can endure it ready to be re-floated during the next summer.

The Great Western Steamship Company suspends sailings on both of their ships: SS Great Britain and PS Great Western.

Brunel Designs the Great Eastern

Mar 25, 1852

Isambard Kingdom Brunel makes his first sketch of what will become the Great Eastern. She is not to just be the biggest ship afloat, she is to be six times bigger than the previous biggest ship. He approached another naval architect to check that it was feasible, and when he agreed he approached the directors of the Eastern Steam Navigation Company. The final design incorporates many of the innovations pioneered by John Russell, as well as several of Brunel's own including the double hull.

Brunel Designs the Royal Albert Bridge

1854

Brunel designs the Royal Albert Bridge for the Cornwall Railway. Parliament had rejected his original plan for a train ferry across the Hamoaze as it could interfere with shipping near a major naval port.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel designs the Three Bridges in Ealing, in London. This set of three overlapping bridges has a road bridge on top, above an aqueduct for the Grand Junction Canal, which is above the Great Western and Brentford Railway.

PS Great Eastern Floats

Jan 31, 1858

The Great Eastern finally floats free after a long and difficult launch. She was so big she had to be laughed sideways as there was not enough space in the river for her to be launched in the conventional way. During the launch she got stuck on the launch ramp and had to be pushed into the water using hydraulic rams.
