Albert Markham was born in Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées department of France the fifth son of Captain John Markham. The family moved to Guernsey, and at 13 he was sent to live with his aunt in London.

HMS alert was a wooden hulled ship with a two-cylinder horizontal single-expansion steam engine built in Pembroke, and commissioned in Chatham. She was armed with one 32-pounder long gun on a pivot mount and sixteen 32-pounder guns in a broadside arrangement.

Lt Markham, the second in command of HMS Alert, was trying to reach the pole by sledge. Having made slow progress, they reached their greatest latitude at 83° 20' 26"N. Suffering from snow blindness, scurvy and exhaustion, they turned back.
