Skirmish at Kowloon

Elliot despatches the 14 gun cutter Louisa, an armed schooner Pearl, and a pinnace from HMS Volage to Kowloon to buy provisions for the ships waiting off the Chinese coast. After negotiations stalled Elliot sent a boat to shore in order to buy the provisions that they needed.

They managed to buy what they needed, only to be forced to hand them over to the Chinese authorities. Elliot demanded the return of the food that they had bought, but after waiting for several hours he had his ships open fire on the Chinese warships who returned fire supported by shore batteries.

The British ships were forced to withdraw as they ran out of ammunition. The Chinese warships followed. As they did they received help from the British ships that had been waiting on the coast, and between them they managed to push the Chinese warships back into harbour ending the first skirmish of the Opium War.
